Combat is a LOT slower, units take a long time to die in melee, so there's a much greater emphasis on flanking, maneuvers, finding the right angle with your ranged units and properly managing ammunition.

Barbarian factions mostly have faster units with a greater focus on ranged combat, allowing them to be competitive with the slower but more powerful units of "civilized" factions by outmaneuvering them. Greek factions rely heavily on hoplites, which are almost unbeatable from the front but are slow and very vulnerable to flanking.

Each faction gets a unique roster which plays very differently.
